Reminder About Referees

As discussed in a previous post, for all group stage games this year there will only be ONE main referee, and a 4th official who stands at half. This is so the WCP Organizing Committee can save costs and become more like the Saskatoon World Cup, which is terrible and a travesty to all competitive soccer.

Before you go thinking that only one referee is ever required, just remember there will be a lot of this happening:

Why would you still call it a 4th official when the 2nd & 3rd officials are not present?? Weird..

Because the role of the official at half is what a traditional 4th Official would do. The "2nd and 3rd officials" are called assistant referees, but they won't be part of the games until the playoffs.

It's an amatuer rec tourney. Who cares. Every year you bitch and moan about ticket prices. Now they take cost cutting measures to keep ticket prices down and you bitch and moan. That call or lack of in the video is the result of a terrible referee, not a lack of AR's. its obvious it didnt go in, the netting didnt move at all and there was a clear change of direction of he ball. That guy clearly has very poor vision or judgement. In Regina the AR's never call anything other than poorly judged off sides and with no offsides in the tournament do we really need them? NO! Quit being bitter that you got shafted out of a pay cheque and not reffing and move on to your over hyping of Norway.

I pretty much guarantee there will be close calls like this in the tournament and there won't be anyone with a good look at what happened. ARs are incredibly valuable for higher level games. Things will get out of hand. I can bitch about prices because the WCPOC cut a major expense, but prices mysteriously remained the same

I agree that AR's have value at higher level soccer, but this isn't higher level soccer. Our own Div. 2 games are better skill than these games as most of these games are watered down teams compared to the Div. 2 Men's League, with a couple of out of town players that bring up the talent pool. Hell most of your team are Div. 3/4 players. The only "high level" games of this tournament are the playoffs and the occassional match up between Top 10 teams like a Sudan/France match. You don't need to be paying 3 officials to watch a South Korea/N. Ireland game as there will be no one there to even notice a missed call and it will have no out come whatsoever on whether a team makes the playoffs.

You clearly have no idea how the money side of this tournament works. You have no idea if sponsor money is gone so that loss of revenue could be countered by fewer officials, what is the cost of field rental is or any other expenses to run the tournament? how do you know if the costs have gone up in other areas as well? And for that matter, how do you know this tournament was even profitable? Maybe Kevin is losing money on this thing so he wanted to cut a cost to make it profitable?

Hmmmm. Those are all interesting what-ifs. Are any of them remotely plausible? Of course not. The WCP Cup would not exist if it didn't make money. It also would be gone if there wasn't a tidy profit margin. Nobody will know what that margin is because its in the best interest of key organizers not to reveal that info. That's the way it goes every year and that's the way it will continue to be.

Its an interesting thought about how much of that sponsor money gets pocketed too. Can't find any mention of the 2013 WCP Cup on CBC any more. That was marketed as community involvement in 2012 so I wonder what happened there.

Regardless, the mens bracket of the tournament will suffer without the full compliment of referees. Maybe not every game, but certainly the majority and definitely every game between closely matched opponents. This isn't even opinion, its straight up fact.

So even if the fewer referee's is a way to make this tournament more profitable for the organizing committee or Kevin, why is that a problem? There's is obviously demand for the product he is putting out there and it's a private venture. It's not a Sask Soccer, or RSA or ACFC venture. It's Kevin's. If he wants to make money from it that his choice and good on him for doing it. Nobody else goes to work for free so why should he?

Actually, plenty of people work this tournament for free. The volunteers. Many of whom believe they're helping soccer in Regina or Saskatchewan. I would love to see a breakdown of who gets what when the final pie is split up.

Nobody is saying there isn't a demand for the product. What it always comes down to is transparency. Why do things cost so much? Where is the money going? What is the message sponsors are getting about where their money ends up? These are the great mysteries of the WCP Organizing Committee.

A ref and and 2 linesmen can't keep some games in check. How is 1 supposed to!

Again, it's a private venture. There is no need for transparency. If you walk into any private business that isn't apublically traded company and for a financial statement they'd laugh you out of the building. Sponsors are paying to advertise their business, not dictate what happens with the money.

There are tons of events that show profits they require volunteers to run it, like Grey Cups, Juno festivals, and many other major events. It's how the world works.

after seeing many missed calls today on balls being called out. And a missed hand ball call that cost a team a game.. Yes, there should be 2 linesman. 3 shitty refs are better than two. And there is more than enough revenue to cover it.

Clearly because one referee cant see everything doesnt make them shitty. Does a player see 100% of everything that happens on the field?...NO. The refs are doing the best they can with the shitty decision to cut out the assistant referees! Granted last year there were some issues with goals being disallowed by assistant referees. Obviously those assistant referees were not qualified and shouldnt have been picked to be in WCP games. It was a poor descision by whomever chose those refs. The answer is to not get rid of them all together. Look at how many calls were not made/should have been made all weekend! Everyone knows this isnt high level soccer, more so a bunch of goons taking advantage of the fact that the one referee cannot see everything. So who do you blame? Kevin for taking away assistane referees? The ref for not being able to "see everything"? NO the answer is all you shit headed players who think you are gods gift to soccer but truly arent that great! You are playing soccer in REGINA....where are you going with it??? NO WHERE so stop bitching and PLAY THE GAME not the player so the rest of this tournament can be somewhat enjoyable to watch!

If all of us parents had their say ...I would tell them to kick your ass out of the tournament! Been watching your comments for a few years and have known you since you played on AC with my son and learned that you are an enormous hypocrite. You are in the group of people in this city that complain about everything and ruin things for others. And imagine throughout all of this your former coach Kevin H has never said a negative thing about you when we ask hi about your blog and especially with all the disgusting lies and deuche bag comments that you make. You have such nice parents and a brother... what the heck happened to you?

Well that was certainly an enlightening comment filled completely with generalities about every day life. Just because some people don't like what I say, doesn't make me a hypocrite, or a terrible person, or someone that "ruins" things for others. If I had that kind of power, wow, watch out world! Although I like to think I would use my power for good instead of evil, based on the lessons from every comic book movie I've ever seen.

I make observations about the tournament. That's it. I don't lie because I don't need to. I'm a cynic because if something seems too good to be true, it usually is. I play in the tournament so that every game, someone has a chance to kick my ass about the blog on the field of play. Hasn't happened yet. If parents get mad about what they read, then they can keep standing in the bleachers and complain about it.

And as an FYI - they've tried to kick me out of the tournament already. That was more hypocritical than anything I could ever possibly do
