2011 WCP Cup Group Wrap-ups

It's been 17 days and finally the group stage of the 2011 WCP Cup is finished. While some groups wrapped up their playoff berths early, others took until the very last Sunday to finish their business. Here are the Group wrap-ups.

Group A: In my preview I figured that El Salvador would get first in this pool based by beating Laos. What I never anticipated was that the group would actually come down to which squad performed best against upstart Sudan. While Laos eked out a 2-1 win, El Salvador succumbed to a 6-3 loss. Luckily for both, the Saturday night contest wasn't do-or-die because Sudan went and choked away a 2-1 loss to Colombia.
Finish: 1. Laos; 2. El Salvador.

Group B: Ireland and Norway went out and handled business early. The two were the class of the group and didn't let any of the other teams get going in the first four games. First place came down to a showdown between the two which Ireland easily won. Not quite what I thought would happen in my group or game preview, but I did accurately predict the order of finish. Sierra Leone also had three impressive wins.
Finish: 1. Ireland; 2. Norway.

Group C: Greece came out and won its first game against Nigeria 4-2. That was unexpected. Then Greece went and also beat Botswana, Italy, and Afghanistan. Crazy. But not as crazy as Greece also tieing France 4-4. Wow. Yes, Greece is one of the teams going through to the quarterfinals, the same team that hadn't one a game in two straight years. On a side note, France didn't lose either and finished first because of goal differential - but that was expected.
Finish: 1. France; 2. Greece.

Group D: This was the Group of Death. Even after each team had played three times it was still unclear whether or not anyone but Scotland was out yet. Poland started off with three clutch wins and ultimately took the group at 5-0. Canada started off strong against Jamaica but then faltered against Poland. Jamaica started off poorly, but surprisingly beat Germany. And Germany didn't do much of anything, but ultimately fell only one goal short (needed a 2-1 win over Canada instead of 1-1 tie) of advancing in secon place. I thought it would come down to Poland, Germany and Canada, and I picked Germany instead of the Canucks. Good for Canada taking care of business.
Finish: 1. Poland; 2. Canada.

Well with some of these predictions it should be a good night of soccer Wednesday night. Winners should be Poland, France, Ireland and the Laos Greece game is up in the air.

thats a pretty strong comment to make about poland having the best keeper in the tourny. the knockout stage is where the real goalies seperate themselves and ultimately win games for their teams.
my picks - Ireland, France, Norway, Greece.
gotta cheer for the underdog. Poland's luck is about to run out, reis cooper is going to pop a hat trick and send polska packing.

annon @ 6:56

who is your pick for the best keeper if not poland's? from what i've seen poland's keeper has already seperated himself from the others

Michal is a great goalie, played with him for years. But there are other great goalies id put on par with him, diakiw, jonah and kluge.

evan and tristian used to be...
not anymore

evan is a cry baby. watch him vs greece, he complains about everything, just keep your mouth shut and play the game

i would say tristan is still the best keeper in the tournament. he makes the saves when they matter, and has proven himself in past.
top 5 keepers :
1. Tristan
2. Peto
3. Michal
4. Jonah
5. Evan

Did u guys watch evan vs Sudan hahaha only reason Laos won cuz he studded out, def top 3 goalie in the tourney.

You guys aren't very smart. Top 5 would be diakiw michal kluge jonah and then tied for 5th tristian and evan! The other 4 weren't in any particular order!

Tristan is garbage. He is an overwieght spaz who thinks he is quality. Evan isn't worth mentioning as if he reads these comments he may start crying and ask for his mom to whipe his tears with a tissue.

Mark Diakiw is right now the top goalie in the province. You can't put Simon Kluge or Michal Bandula infront of Mark for one obvious reason which is both Simon and Michal BACK UP Mark for the University of Saskatchewan. Enough said.

Is Diakw like 20 or 21 compared to Michal's 18? That could be a reason too...wait naah...that's not good enough we don't have our youngest players sit till they earn a spot anymore...that's ridiculous. I've never seen Diakw play but he obviously wasn't tested in the games for Ireland so can't say he'd get my vote for keeper of the tournament. Michal on the other hand has been a standout!

Ok Let's be cool and relax on the GK ratings... I am not the biggest fan of Tristian, yet ONCE UPON A TIME... he was hands down the best goalie in the province... yet times have changed and with the changing times new players move up the rankings....

Meehow is sick.. has had a great tournament... yet age is what it is... at this moment in time if Diakiw is better than him, Diakiw is better then him... I wouldn't take anything away from Meehow... yet right now Diakiw is playing at a high level.

Will Meehow surpass Diakiw in the near future? There is a good possibilty that will happen...

Still loving the fact your posting with the name Barto

Not sure if you can really rate the keepers. I've seen the best gk's shit the bed and the worst stand on their heads. Evan is not THE ultimate best but how can you say the gk on last years winning team isnt a top player? Tristian and Diakaw are tops as well. But it's all a matter of opinion.

The way to rate average keepers from the good keepers is if they keep their teams in the game or win the game for their team. So far, Michal and Evan have both done that during this tournament. THE BEST 4 KEEPERS IN THIS TOURNAMENT ARE STILL PLAYING! LET'S SEE WHO IS THE BEST WHEN THE PRESSURE IS ON.
