Preview: Group C

*We're in the final week run-up to the 2011 WCP Cup and it's time to get the tournament predictions in order. I'll cover Groups A, B, C and D on a different day throughout the week, and get to the quarterfinals, semifinals and final on Friday. For Saturday, the first day of the tournament, I'll have an interesting surprise post.*

The Contenders: This year we'll see a couple of good teams with something to prove and chief amongst those teams is France. Barely losing 2-1 to Ireland in the 2010 semifinals has got to still sting and I doubt any team will give them a real challenge in round-robin play. Luckily for Nigeria, besides the French there isn't anyone all that strong in this group and back-to-back playoff appearances should be in order. When the two play on April 15th at 9:30 p.m., expect France to impose its will.

The Challengers: For those of you who love VCU, Afghanistan and Botswana may be the only underdogs with a chance in 2011. Both teams played entertaining and sometimes inspired soccer in 2010 and Botswana even managed to somehow get a 2-2 tie against Canada. However, with a chance to do something great Botswana ultimately choked to Columbia 1-0 and Afghanistan couldn't manage to beat any strong teams in a tough group. Botswana faces Nigeria on April 9th at 10 p.m., and then Afghanistan the very next night at 10 as well so we'll know right then if they have a chance or not. Afghanistan gets to face Nigeria at 9 p.m. on April 16th.

The Pretenders: I almost feel bad poking fun at Italy and Greece, but then I remember their epic, 3-2 battle in the very last group stage game of 2010 that ultimately put the Greeks in last place overall and the Italians in second-last place. It was a thing to behold. Two extremely proud, extremely weak teams; already eliminated but doing their damndest not to lose to the other. The game-winning goal celebration could have doubled as a tournament-winning celebration. I predict much of the same in 2011, but unfortunately these two play in the middle of the tournament so they won't know that last place is on the line. Much less drama.

Predicted Order of Finish
1. France
2. Nigeria
3. Botswana
4. Afghanistan
5. Italy
6. Greece

Word on the street is France will be missing 3 players(Murphy, Yianni & Travis) against Nigeria. Might be a bit sticky at first but I still dont think Nigeria will beat them. To much depth.

Who considers Travis a key player???

for sure travis is a key player for france. he scored probably 5 or 6 goals last year which is no slouch. has brick feet, but can still create and put the ball in the net.

I would love to see all the players, on France, play like Travis Brady.

none of you have put your names or what teams you play for so how can you comments be credible? clearly you are not a respectable player and you have to hide behind your anonimity. you are the reason why these blogs are possibly getting shut down.

Travis is no dud, not a playmaker, but he put the ball in the net last year, but who will make the chances without yianni and murphy.

Ok let's be fair... if a guy scores 5 or 6 goals on his team, he is making some sort of impact... yet at the same time you have to look at the fact of when did these goals come in the match?
France is a high powered team and if a guy scores 5 goals in a tournament and France won a few games by blow outs... those five goals don't have the same impact.

If Travis a player that you would consider technically strong or outstanding.. I wouldn't say yes to that... but is he a role player that plays his role on his team to help them win... then the answer to that may be yes...

I think the problem is that people aren't arguing points in a specific manners... by saying the guy sucks; that's pointless... as maybe his first touch sucks, yet he has a knack for goal scoring...

As for Yadda Yadda's comment... I think you should post with your own name before you call out anyone else's credibility, as you may aswell post as anonymous as no one knows who yadda yadda is.

Greece cant finish below the last 3teams, we are way better than that a to be honest i see my team making it to the semis until its decided i wont believe what you all say, i sill believe in us and all the hard working great players i call family

They will be relying a lot on brett to make chances for whoever is up there without there other 2 impact players, when he himself should be turning and scoring as a forward.

Goal scoring doesn't mean you are a good player at all. Anyone that weighs how good a player is because he score "5 or 6" goals is not fit to write on this blog. Some of the best players in this tournament are set up guys not goal scorers, hence why Travis Brady sucks even more. It's a team sport and it starts with the D!!!

and scoring goals doesnt matter in a game then?

I was told travis and murphy will be missing the nigeria game, didn't hear anything about yianni. Could decide 1st and 2nd that game though. Can't wait to watch it.
