Pay Through the Nose: The 2011 WCP Cup Ticket Prices

The unofficial slogan for the 2011 WCP Cup is: Spend, Spend, Spend.

For the third straight year the prices for the adult single-day ticket and the adult tournament pass are rising. No longer is the price of admission less than the price of a beer. Oh no. It's now cheaper to drink than to watch a single soccer game.

Want to only watch the final games on April 23rd? It costs less to go and watch a newly released movie in theatres.

If you're only 16? Tough luck - WCP considers you an adult and is charging you full price.

If you're looking to get a tournament pass: Remember that you can take your girlfriend/wife out for a nice, fancy dinner for significantly less money.

Yes, costs to run the tournament have risen, but the prices now being charged can safely be described as exorbitant. (Maybe it has to do with rising lawyer fees to squash out the little guys).

Below are the NFL-model ticket prices:

Adult (Regular, Daily): $7
Adult (Final Day): $10
15-and-under (Regular, Daily): $2
15-and-under (Final Day): $3
10-and-under (Regular, Daily): Free
10-and-under (Final Day): Free
Tourny Pass: (Final Day NOT included): $85!!!!

So hopefully you've saved enough money to watch the 2011 WCP Cup. If prices keep rising, next year might be out of my pay bracket. Need to eat, drink and have shelter first.

Man, this tournament is getting more and more expensive each year. My parents love soccer, but they really can't afford two passes at $85 bucks each. You might as well create a team and play cause atleast then you get into the final as well. Some people can't afford how expensive this tournament is. What does the money go towards anyways?

Would it be fair to say that the a good portion of the money goes to pay for rental of the facility for the tourney? Because if it is then I am all for making the tournament shorter with less teams. Or drop the youth wcp portion at least. The cost for this thing is crazy!

A follow my team option would be nice, much like World Cup and Euro Cup usually have.

there is no way a good portion goes toward rental. Look at what the fees are for a soccer season. Teams still pay fees, there is TV sponsors, volunteers working, and cabarets.

RSA chrages roughly $25 000 in rental for the 3 weeks. Just so everyone knows. It is expensive for rental.

I don't know the actual cost, but from what I understand, the rental is a massive amount of the expenses for this tournament.

I do agree that constricting the the tournament (to something like 16 men's teams...keep the youth/women's as is) would be a good idea, not only financially in facility rentals, but it would also increase the calibre of the tournament (Assuming teams would drop their weaker players and pick up the stronger players from the 'folded' teams).

I like the 'follow my team' package idea too. Allows the parents/spouses etc to just buy a team pass to see their team and not worry about buying a 10 pack when they have no intentions of watching any more than the 4-5 round robin games.

As for 'TV Sponsors', I highly doubt that they are sharing any of the costs of the tournament or paying anything to be a sponsor. I would assume they are coming out to cover the event as more of a local news story and that WCP Cup understands it's great promotion, so they don't charge any kind of 'sponsor fee'

I wish my family could afford to come to this tournament. I have three brothers and my mom and dad. It would be like over 400 bucks for all of them to come. Just not happening. I wish they had family packs, at a good rate. I also think that maybe the tournament could look into maybe other cities close by like moose jaw who don't charge much for people to play at their soccer facility. People pay something like $3 bucks to enter. You pick a field, and play for as long as you want. That's a great idea. Wish we could relocate to the nice moose jaw turf. MAYBE IN THE FUTURE???

Paying to rent the turf we have for $ 25 000 is such a rip off. That turf isn't even nice. Moose Jaw is a great idea. Someone tell Kevin. It's dirt cheap and a much better turf that we have. You would pay no where near what we pay now.

Lets BOYCOT the RSA next year for the tournament! WHO'S with me?

Anonymous said...

am with u on that, but even tho its that expensive to rent the turf, tickets shouldnt go up that much every yr, the less the amount they charge the more ppl they will get out and make even more money than thinking that it would all come from raising tickets, way to loose a whole number of supporters for our teams, and due to the fact that there wont be alcohol in the stands the attendance is going to drop this yr which will be a shame coz this is one of the best thing to happen in sk

Basic economics is what's happening here. There are only so many tickets to go around, and if make them cheap mom's, dad's, aunt's, uncles, grandma, and grandpa would either

"A" Not be able to attend because there is no available tickets left because they were bought at an incredibly low price. People don't want to pay door prices every day.

"B" A bunch of tickets bought, and nobody coming to the games because they are only there to watch a few games but the incredibly low prices made then buy the tickets.

All around no matter how you swing it, you need to understand that econmics dictates the prices of the tickets, the more people that want to be there the more expensive it will. Econimcs at the elementary level is defined as the distribution of scarce resources. If there is only a certain amount of tickets we want to the be available to everyone, and therefore need to stop one family from buying 5 full tournament packages. This will allow other families to at least be able to have the ability to buy tickets. This makes families share, or decide who really needs the tickets.

Now if WCP is left with a large amount of tournament packages he needs to assess the prices as the demand is not as great as he may have calculated but seeing as the prices keep increasing I am guessing the tickets keep selling, and if sold out, he needs to adjust the price accordingly. The WCP also needs to make sure that there is legally enough capacity for people just coming to certain games and paying door prices. If prices are cheap, they will be turned away. Also, seating is a huge option, next you will all be complaining of seating.

At the end of the day these prices will eliminate the young little kids running around the stadium not even watching the game and playing on the back fields from coming. It will provide a better environement for the game to be watched and not being annoyed by said children jumping up and down on the bleachers whining for Tim Horton's donuts. Stop Grandparents from wanting cheering to be quiet, and asking people to not bang a drum or toot horns.

Lets face it people will be there no matter the price.

Lets hold the tournament in Moose Jaw next year! Way cheaper. 3 dollar entrance fee and fields to be used for as long as you want.

Norway aint got nothing. This blog aint got nothing. ROI will win this tournament this year so as far as I'm concerned all the trash and debating can stop. EVERYONE knows who the best team is.... should I spell it out ... ROI.

they want an arm, a leg and my left what?

What a joke this is becoming. Someone is skimming off the top (in my opinion) with the entry fees and admission. What a rip off this is becoming.

Unfortunatley, there are those that will complain for the sake of complaining. The WCP cup is the best thing that has happened to Saskatchewan soccer. It is three weeks of entertaining soccer. Tournament costs are increasing and unfortunately they will be passed off to the teams and spectators. The tournament has many dedicated individuals who volunteer their time and work tirelessly to make it a success. Lets thank Kev and his group for having the forsight and thick skin to put on this tournament. Contrary to some opinions, no one is getting wealthy off it. I am not sure why there are so many in this sport that shoot inwards at each other.

I encourage you to come out and support showcase soccer events such as the WCP Cup and help grow soccer.

RK your a fool. Half the people that want to come, won't ... first off the prices... second off no alcohol. Your an idiot in my opinion. Get your facts straight. It's cheaper to play. Atleast you get into the final for free.

Anonymous said...

I heard Kevin makes over $100,000 each year from putting on this tournament...not sure if Thats true, but that wouldn't help prices.

Anonymous said...

RK is not the idiot you are, I guarantee the stands will be full again, and only your shitty friends can't afford it because they would rather spend their money on booze at the shitty ass bars that Regina has and the so called DJ's they have. Stop getting upset because someone is smarter then you.

The tournament does not net 100K for Kevin. You are badly mis-informed. WRT Anonymous March 27, 9:39, you must be on glue. I bet the tournament won't miss you or your friends and their negative attitudes. You will drop $40 on booze but complain about a $7 cover charge. In your wisdom, do you suggest that WCP subsidize the costs of the tournament? Get real man...

Hey RK, you really are an idiot. I'll see ya out there buddy ... me and my friends aka negative attitudes. I hope I bump into you first. FUN TIMES AHEAD FOR YOU.

What's with the internet tough guy calling out RK? lol This clown doesn't even have the balls to post a name (made up or real) and he's gonna think someone is threatened by this likely collar poppin' preppy Smirnoff Ice drinking fool? Go stick to hanging out with your douchebag friends at The Drink. The tournament won't miss guys like you.

And anyone that think Kevin is making $100,000 on this tournament is completely on glue! Maybe gross profits are in that range, but after expenses I'm sure it's no where near that, especially with field rentals in the $25,000 range. Does he (or WCP) make some cash from this, probably, and why not...he put a lot of work into this tournament.

Ok enough with calling out posters and making sideways threats. We get it, people are mad and want to stare each other down. I haven't erased anything yet because both sides are making good points, but if it continues then I'll start erasing stuff indiscriminately. I'm getting bored - say something original or be deleted.
