Feeling Nostalgic (and lazy)

This is from something I wrote in 2010 - enjoy.

Remembering 2007....

It's been four [sic] years but the thrill of the 2007 victory is still easy to remember for most members of the 2011 [sic] Norway squad. In 2007 the team managed to pull off a magical run of unparalleled dominance throughout the tournament and became one of only four [sic] teams to ever win the WCP Cup.

The 4-3 overtime victory over ROI in the final was a perfect ending for the tournament. Everyone wanted ROI to lose that year and Norway had the perfect squad to stop them - plenty of good, strong midfield players; a defensive corps playing way above expectations; stellar goalkeeping; and a tournament MVP in Adam Payette who was nearly unmarkable for three straight playoff games.

Even after claiming first place in its group after round-robin play, Norway was for some reason considered an underdog to Greece in the quarterfinals. The Greeks had a very strong team that year, but their lack of any real scoring threat meant that they needed to play mistake-free defense to stop Norway from winning. That didn't happen and Payette scored the game-winner. 2-1 Norway.

In the semis Norway was once again written off against Jamaica. No chance, nada. Yeah right. Norway took that game to an overconfident Jamaican squad. It was fast and chippy, but otherwise brilliant soccer. This was the game that Norway really hit its stride and scored some beautiful goals off of free kicks and give-and-gos in the box. Payette scored once again. 4-2 Norway.

And then the final. Tons of people watched and cheered for Norway. Still didn't give them a chance though. ROI was a good team (when aren't they?) and was expected to have it wrapped up by halftime. Think again. Norway got out to an early 2-0 lead despite tons of ROI pressure. It was a dirty game - tons of cheap shots from both teams. Eventual full-time score: 3-3. Then game the goal-kick in overtime. Scott Waller hoofed the ball down the field, Payette out-dueled Matt Leung in the box and put the header past ROI's keeper into the corner. Norway victory!

Players still remaining from that Norway team: Dave Chisolm, Adam Gottselig, Josh Gyurek, Stefan Husdal, Braden Husdal, Justin Slinn, and Colin Wirth.

are you stupid, the game was 2-0 with ten minutes left and Norway scored 3 goals within the last 8 minutes of the game to beat Greece, Get your facts straight Moron. Go Greece, and you werent good that year, you were lucky to beat gREECE. LUCK. LUCK LUCK. and bad luck for greece. once again

I think Greece was lucky to even make the playoffs that year. They're just not a good team overall. Will need a lot more than luck to win again. As for Norway, luck doesn't win championships, skill does. Greece was lucky it even scored a goal.

Honestly, all the Greece post from their supporters is just a waste of time. You ALWAYS say the same thing... Greece got unlucky, Greece should have won... shoulda, woulda, coulda... just a bunch of excuses. Not only did you lose, I have yet to sit down and waste my time watching a Greece game as you ALWAYS suck ass.

So pipe down and show your skills on the field and then start rambling about how "Awesome" the Greeks are... cause at this moment and time you keep painting the picture of Greece being a complete joke. So do your team a favour and shut up and put up on the field. Once you've won a few matches and crawl up the rankings, then come on here and banter... cause Greece has become as relevant as the Women who keep posting for Women's predictions on here... I'd rather actually hear about the women's draw rather then hear another Greece comment.. and that should sum that up.

I think the only reason why Greece did decent in that yr of the world cup because the movie 300 came out that yr, but really that movie was brutal

our first game against Nigeria will be a message we going to send out to all of u who think we not a good team, guarantee u we win by 5 goals, and then going to get better and better, we are focused, the desire is there, the love for our country, and most importantly enjoy ourselves

How about this... If you guys do manage to beat Nigeria by 5 goals; as you have stated will happen... you can hype up Greece all you want... I will even post that Greece is "UNREAL"... till then how about less yappy yappy and you focus on actually scoring one goal against Nigeria and go from there... as you do realize that if you lose, and better yet... if you lose in an embarrassing fashion, your also going to send a strong message to the tournament.

Just thought I'd state the obvious... but again hearing about Greece is like sitting down and watching a Youth Game and finding that to be exciting. Albeit that there is properly alot more skill in that youth game then Greece by the sounds of it.

the greece guy is JOKING. How is everyone too dumb to figure that out?

i actually watched the game and Nigeria should have beat them by like 6 goals but they never really did any shooting wanted to walk the ball in net, i know Braden is going to say they didn't have all their players but a quality team wins with whoever they have, so now i cant tell u that Norway can beat ROI, noway as yo name says

Those rankings aren't going to sit well at all with the Greeks! Yet at this moment the self proclaim hype machine that is Greece may actually be ranked 26th as you forgot to include
24th; Ukraine Womens
25th; Chile Womens
Then standing firmly in 26th place.... Greece.

Anyone know what the situation with ClockCleaner is all about? I just read something on an earlier thread and missed out on the action I guess...

I would think england would be a contender for your list as well...I might move the Afghan's off that list as well...they'd pretty close to the bottom 10, but I'm not sure about 23rd. As for Scotland, they look GREATLY improved (not contender great...greatly improved) in their friendly against N. Ireland. If they were in any other group, I don't think they'd place in the bottom 10 of this year (if that one game was any indication), but unfotunately, they are caught in a tough group against teams that will be looking to rack up big scores as tiebreakers to move out of the group if needed, so it's hard to say.

afghanistan is goinh to finish round 5th or th this yr we putting in alot of efort and hard work, got some skilled players this yr

Afghan has brutal team They will lose to FRENCH by 10 goals. maybe Botswana can beat them

Anonymous said...

we cant loose to France by 10 goals we have a good goalie and our defense has improved, our game against France is going to be as close as possible may be even pull off an up set or loose but will be highly contested, and i wont take anything away from Botswana but there's no way we loosing to them, not even Nigeria can beat us if we play our game not theirs

if afghan loses any of ther first 2 games, they will definitely lose the three last games to Nigeria, france and grece
