Norway 4, Afghanistan 1 - Recap

Norway dominated early but seemed to think that a nice goal was better than a blast from far out. It took the Norwegians much longer than it should have to score considering how much pressure was applied to Afghanistan in the middle. To the Afghanis credit, they dropped numerous defenders back and took away shooting lanes well. Finally, Justin Sawka teed up from 25 yards out and blasted one in.

Afghanistan came right back with a nice free kick goal over Brett Moore's head. Momentarily Norway was shocked. But only momentarily. Two minutes later Adam Payette turned his man and rifled one in. 2-1 Halftime.

It was all Norway in the second with Afghanistan getting only one quality chance. Chad Campbell and Andrew Baulin both scored nice goals from in the box and it was 4-1 with 10 minutes to play. That's when Afghanistan decided to show why it is the team with the least amount of class in the entire tournament - handily beating out Italy for the award.

After receiving one caution for a dangerous challenge, Afghanistan then went on to accumulate another for having too many men on the field. 9-1=8, not 9 like they kept playing with. Then, down supposedly 9 men to 7, they still couldn't figure it out and wasted approximately two minutes just trying to get a guy off the field. Still, not a big deal. But then one guy decided he better take a THIRD caution for his team by jumping in front of a ball, right as Norway was about to take a free kick. When the referee showed him the yellow, he turned, told the ref "F U" and was shown the red. Real classy buddy. Way to earn everyone's respect in your first year of the tournament. You couldn't do it with your play so you and your team did it with words and actions. Good job!

It gets better of course. After the game was finished the Afghanis proceeded to hound the referee - probably complaining about how the ref could possibly penalize a team that always takes bad penalties and isn't organized enough to figure out they need to play short on a yellow card. Rumour has it that one of them threatened the ref leaving the facility.

I'm mad because the Afghanis took up so much time taking cards that Norway never really got a chance to play with the man advantage. No goals and no chance to pad the +/- that could determine which team advances through the pool. Thanks Afghanistan, really classy guys.

Listen, whoever writes this stuff! I don't know you and I don't have anything against your team and I don't care what you write because I have no control over your mouth or action. WE are privileged to live in a free and fair society and we all have the right to express our freedom of speech. I know lots of great players and great personalities on your team and there are some I don't like, but I am not going to make a generalization and say you guys don't have class or this or that because of what you write or one or two person that I don't like.

In terms of our players and our team, this is our first year and we have lots of young guys. There might be 1 or 2 player who might be labeled as immature or "Unclassy" but making a generalization and calling everybody "Unclassy" is "Unclassy" and disrespectful. This is an indicator of your personality, your judgment and your attitude toward active member of your soccer community and your society. But as I mentioned before you have every right to express your freedom of speech and I have noticed that lately you have been very active in terms of exercising you right and wrote lots of things about our team and everybody else.

In terms of the ref, we know what the ref did, you guys probably know what the ref did and the rest of the audience know what she did. She gave us card and told us to "f off". I would expect that from a new referee but she has been officiating for so long and you don't expect that from somebody who have been refereeing for the past 10 years. After the game I talked to a few other teams and to the fans and they were not fond of her either. I believe some teams have already submitted a formal complain about her. After all we all need to be responsible for our action and in a free and fair society nobody should act with impunity. That mean if the players get punished for their action the refs also needs to be responsible for their action.

as I mentioned, I don't know you and I hate to play cat/mouse game with people and I hate nothing else but to sit behind my computer and post anonymous comments and make generalization about people or teams. As such, I challenge you reveal to your identity to the rest of the soccer and community and debate with me one on one. I am very straight to people and if I see something wrong or something that I don't like I tell them to their face. I stand for myself and for the people's right and I would do anything to defend that right including going to Supreme Court of Canada if I have to have to.

I wish you the best with the rest of your tournament!

I don't think this post was meant to call the whole Afghanistan team unclassy but rather to frown upon the actions of a FEW individuals who showed disrespect for officials and for what this tournament is about.

This tournament prides itself on the spirit and intensity of the fans and athletes who participate but a line has to be drawn separating competitiveness and stupidity.

The red card was stupid and deserved as were the other cards. You can't have complaints. The refs in this tournament shouldn't have to put up with that.

The problem here is that if someone on my team began threatening officials in the lobby they wouldn't be on the team. Having them on the team condones this type of behaviour. If I was a ref and some idiot who can't play soccer and probably knows about 3 of the rules told me to F-off I'd say it right back too. You guys should be super embarassed 1) For your apparent lack of knowledge of the game and 2) For even having guys on the team who would behave as off the field as they did. I generally don't agree with the Norway posts but this one is pretty unbiased. YOU GUYS ARE MORONS!

Ahmad, thanks for commenting. I understand why you're upset but I'm sticking with what I said - that display took the whole team down. Young players aren't an excuse. Where were the older players telling them to cool down and get it together? There's a ton of passion in this tournament but so far everyone else has managed to keep their anger in check. Afghanistan didn't just cause problems for the referee - it caused problems for team Norway too. We might not advance to the playoffs because we weren't given a chance to capitalize on your mistakes. One or two guys may have caused most of the problems but the rest of the team still has to man up and take responsibility.

One last note - please keep all of the free society, prejudice, freedom of speech and other things out of it. That has nothing to do with what happened on Friday night or what I wrote. Stay within the soccer issues and don't make it something its not. This isn't a blog about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, its a blog about soccer.

its really funny how last yr Saudi did pretty much the same thing in the rsa league, some of these guys on saudi and afghan are a joke.

As an audience I am very pleased to see Afghans play. I think they have done a great job on their first year. First year, people have some difficulties adjusting to the rules and the atmosphere of the tournament. I don't know how team Norway did on their first year, but I am aware that most team started up with very bad scores.

GO AFGHANISTAN!!!

you must explain why you mention italy when you talking about class maybe you can tell us

Playmaker said...

Anyone who watched Italy play Laos would know why I mentioned them. Disgraceful how they treated the referees in that game.

Anonymous said...

maybe is because the referees give everything to laos just because adam ask i do not you but you are a joke and maybe next time the ref should wear a laos jersey

These Afghan guys are idiots. I agree with what was said earlier. They are classless. What a joke of a team. Stop blaming the REF for stuff. Christine is a good REF. She calls things as she sees it. Just because you dudes come from Afghanistan and don't respect women, doesn't mean you can trash talk and disrespect people on the soccer field. Get lost buddy.

Anonymous said...

Christine Hoff is the worst REF ever. She needs to stop REF mens game and stop making calls to impact the tournament aka standings. She has reffed alot of games that her boyfriend Mike Collins team ireland plays against. Not even cool. People know about this and something needs to be done.

Playmaker said...

All right, enough bashing refs. Christine does a good job every game and no, she never refs Mike's games or games that will affect Mike's team so stop saying she does because its not true. Mike's team has won the tournament 3 of the past 4 years - I don't think Christine had anything to do with that so let it go buddy.

For the Italy guy, you guys played poorly and were beaten handily. Stop pretending the ref had anything to do with it and live with the fact that this just wasn't your year. A 1-4 record doesn't have anything to do with the referees in the tournament.

Listen up! I thought I don't have to write on this blog any more and waste my time.

It is none of your business where we come from and what we do. Most of us have been living and growing up in Canada and are a citizen like you. So I hope you get my point if you are smart enough!

We think that was a one sided refereeing from the start to the finish. That is the point and nothing else!

The above comment does not come from my team because nobody on my team knows who the ref is dating. And I certainly don't sit behind my computer screen and post anonymous comment. I leave that for you!

I want you to cut all this useless discussion about our team and end the story right here. I will not write a comment in the future because I don't think there is a point for that.(Unless I am forced to!). I don't even know who I am talking to!

Thanks Ahmad,
Its a free country, nobody is forcing you to post anything. But yeah, that comment about Afghanistan respecting women was out of line. Let's keep those comments out of it everyone please.

Still, back to soccer. The reffing had nothing to do with the 4-1 result. Honestly, Afghanistan had like three shots on net total. It wasn't even close. Don't blame the refs.

Ok listen up. The guy that posted that crap about Christine Hoff not impacting the standings. Your full of shit and wrong. She reffed alot of game in Ireland pool this year (2010 WCP CUP). Whether she is the main ref or the side line ref, she still has the ability to make stupid calls, which where seen by many people on the field. You need to get your facts straight before you post shit about how she doesn't help Mike's stupid team out. Ireland won't win this year anyways, so have fun crying out that one you clown.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above post. Christine is a brutal ref and she shouldn't be involved in reffing mens games. I wish Afghan got another ref. It wasn't fair to them to get such a crappy ref, and most of the WCP crowd, staff, players, etc. know she sucks.

Anonymous said...

You guys give sore losers a bad name. Wow. Afghanistan is NOT a good team. They had a 1-4 record and only got a win because Scotland is TERRIBLE! It wasn't fair to Christine to have to ref such a terrible team because all of the WCP staff, players, etc. knows that Afghanistan sucks. Christine is one of the top rated officials in Western Canada. And if you think I'm making that up then you're full of shit and get your facts straight. If you think good officiating is bad officiating then your opinion isn't worth the time it took me to read it anyways. Next year hopefully Afghanistan will have a team that's better than Div 5 and then they won't feel the need to blame the referees for their terrible results.

Afghan doesn't suck. Norway does. That's why you fags arn't going to get close to winning this tournament ever again. No ones like you, so fuck off. Leave the tournament.

You poor Norway assholes. Good luck beating France. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

You guys blow big fat cock. You will never win against France. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAH

Fat Payette can't even run these days.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH MOTHER FUCKERS.

Afghanistan people don't respect women. They beat them.

In regards to the last few posts.....you little boys need to grow up. Afghan really is a terrible team. And the way they acted on and off the field was an embarrassment to them. And bashing Norway like that just to boost your self esteem is real immature. When players are being straight up shit heads and mouthing off to the ref(when they clearly dont know the rules of soccer) the ref has the right and obligation to do something about it. So deal with it. And as your first year in the tournament, Afghanistan really gave themselves a bad rep. Good luck next year....
